But the age of the Stone Face has passed. The modern caretakers of such wonders as the Garden of the Gods, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, seem almost too embarrassed to mention former landmarks of the park such as "Mushroom and Toad Rocks" and "The Kissing Camels."

Nowadays these formations are marked only by discrete notes on the park map, or oblique references such as "Scotsman Picnic Grounds" or "Siamese Twins Trail." A new visitor center expounds upon the wonders of "ecosystem management," "transitional ecotones," and "recolonization bioreserves." In comparison with this weighty mission to save the earth, interest in the misshapen boulders and outcrops seems childish and naive.
