In more recent times, these same earthy manifestations of divine powers became the "curiosities" and "freaks of nature" visited by a new, restless populace eager for entertainment and novelty. These tourists of the sublime came seeking not a connection with the mineral world, but proof of God's carelessness in creating it.
This was the Golden Age of the Stone Face, when adventurers wandered to the ends of the earth in search of the exotic, the bizarre, the freakish, the unusual, and perhaps a visage of Abraham Lincoln as divine seal-of-approval of American Manifest Destiny.
