A 1911 account of an ascent of Mount Horrid by botanist D. Lewis Dutton locates the Old Man of the Mountain as just above Haystack Rock, a large freestanding boulder visible from Brandon Gap at the east end of the Great Cliff. The postcard photo was taken from a much closer viewpoint.
