Pittsburg, New Hampshire
A vintage postcard from around the 1930s or 40s shows a wooden highway sign that once stood near the small town of Pittsburg, New Hampshire
45th Parallel Half way between the north pole and the equator |
A close look at the photograph shows that 45th Parallel tourists once used the sign as a guest register to say "I was here!" The photo is not quite detailed enough to decipher the names, sadly. It would be interesting to read who the travellers were who once stopped here and when.
The town of Pittsburg (current population 800) lies about four miles north of the 45th Parallel, so the actual location of the sign was probably a bit closer to the town of Clarksville (current population 294). The sign may have been located along Highway 145. In 1998 a metal New Hampshire Historical Marker was placed near the location where the Parallel crosses Highway 145.
