CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE
built 1870
paper model scale 1:500
The tallest lighthouse in the United States was built to warn ships of the dangerous Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras where the warm Gulf Stream meets the cold Labrador Current, producing storms and turbulent waters. Westward erosion of the sandy Outer Banks threatened to undermine the foundation of the brick lighthouse before it was moved several thousand feet inland in 1999.
