Merchant Peter Faneuil donated money to build Boston a new marketplace with upper floor meeting hall. The distinctive grasshopper weathervane symbolizing trade and commerce has been in place since 1742, while the building itself has been remodeled and modified several times, most significantly the major expansion in 1806 by architect Charles Bulfinch which doubled the size of the building.
