EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
built 1930
paper model scale 1:3000
For nearly half a century the Empire State reigned as the world's tallest skyscraper. During its construction, the true height of 1250 feet was kept secret to outdo the builders of the Chrysler Building being built at the same time. The decorative spire was designed as a dirigible docking port, though it was never used for that purpose. Construction of the building was completed in a rapid 14 months, though after it opened in the midst of the Depression it was not fully occupied for 20 years.
A 1:4000 scale postcard version of this model is also available from Wurlington Press
