Arched Fence

A 260-foot fence along the highway defines the northern edge of the garden. The precise rhythm of the posts is emblematic of Herman Rusch's style of construction. The arches are created by iron bands from wheels, covered with concrete. The fence has survived so well for 40 years because each of the towers is connected underground with a concrete foundation as well.

A closer view of the ornaments on top of the arches. Rusch often mixed paint into his concrete mix to color the sculptures. Many of the small pieces of glass pictured were meticulously replaced during restoration by the Kohler Foundation in 1994.
