Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Aquitaine, France
Northeast of Bordeaux in the small commune of Saint André de Cubzac there is a rugged stone monument marking the 45th Parallel. The stele stands on a bluff called the Montalon which enjoys a panoramic view over the Dordogne river. Behind the monument are several round tower ruins of eighteenth century windmills, which are local landmarks. There were once a dozen windmills on this hilltop which ground grain grown on the rich nearby farmland, land which is nowadays more often planted with the famous vineyards of the Bordeaux region.
The inscription on the monument reads:
AQUITAINE 45e DEGRE LATITUDE NORD <--------------------> |
