Alpena, Michigan
South of Alpena and north of Ossineke, the M-23 highway skirts a large sandy marsh on the edge of Lake Huron's Thunder Bay. At about halfway along the marsh there is a plain highway sign on the east side of the road. The sign reads:
You are now crossing Halfway between the Equator |
A sign has marked the 45th Parallel crossing here for many decades. Two antique postcards show earlier versions of the sign on Highway 23 in the 1930s or 40s and in the 1960s. Note the fluctuations in the lake level over the years:
