Washington Monument 1:1500 scale miniature paper model, about 4.5 inches tall This 555-foot marble obelisk was the tallest structure in the world when it was finished, and remains the worlds tallest stone column. The monument was begun in 1848, but political disputes, a lack of funds, and later the Civil War, stalled construction for over 20 years. The original design featured a round colonnade at the base, with a bronze statue of Washington in a chariot, but when construction resumed the monument was altered to a simple obelisk.
